EAMML - EAM Method Library

Last modified by Florian Matthes Feb 8, 2017

Summary

Organizations seeking to introduce an EA management function are typically faced with a challenging lack of standardization in the field. Although the topic is heavily researched by practitioners, researchers, and tool vendors, no commonly accepted understanding of the scope, reach, and focus of EA management exists. This fact can be explained by the organizational structures, contexts, cultures, and requirements, which are specific for each enterprise and therefore ask for an enterprise-specific EA management function tailored according to the needs of the respective enterprise. In the context of the EAMML, the EA management function is thereby defined as follows:

EA management is a continuous and self maintaining management function seeking to improve the alignment of business and IT and to guide the managed evolution of an (virtual) enterprise. Based on a holistic perspective on the enterprise furnished with information from other enterprise level management functions it provides input to, exerts control over, and defines guidelines for these enterprise-level management functions. The EA management function consists of the activities envision EA, document EA, analyze EA, plan EA, decide on EA, and enforce EA.

The idea of the EAMML is to provide practical guidance for organizations to support the design and development of an enterprise-specific EA management function. The EAMML aims at providing a common understanding of EA management, the main activities that the EA management function consists of, and typical management concerns related to this topic. The main activities of the EA management function are further detailed in the EAMML and complemented with best practice methods derived from information on how various organizations addressed typical EA management concerns.

The objectives of the EAMML are to equip readers with the knowledge to:

  • gather, describe, and prioritize their EA-related concerns
  • select management methods for addressing the concerns and integrate them into a comprehensive EA management function
  • customize and tailor the EA management function to the corporate culture and organizational specificities.

The above actions are thereby not limited to establishing a brand-new EA management, but can also be applied to refine and improve an existing EA management function.
