Trend Analysis of NLP Use Cases in the Legal Domain within the DACH Region

This thesis builds upon the Legal AI Use Case Radar Report, a dynamic and evolving resource that annually updates the state of Legal AI use cases through surveys, interviews, and literature reviews. While the Radar highlights current use cases, this study aims to deepen its insights by capturing how these use cases evolve over time and identifying shifting trends within the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland).

An updated literature review will form the foundation of this analysis, tracking the changing relevance of NLP use cases and uncovering both emerging applications and declining priorities in the legal sector. Additionally, this study will provide new Experience Reports based on semi-structured interviews with legal professionals, documenting real-world challenges and opportunities in integrating NLP technologies.

Published on the Legal AI Use Case Radar website, these insights—along with an analysis of Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects (ELSA)—will contribute to ongoing refinement of the Radar. By expanding its scope to include trend mapping and real-world applications, this thesis aims to ensure the Radar remains a valuable resource that reflects the latest advancements and practical impacts of Legal AI.

Research questions:

  • RQ1: What are the key trends of NLP technologies in Legal AI, as reflected in both the literature and their utilization by companies within the DACH region?
  • RQ2: How can a structured methodology be developed and applied to track the evolution of Legal AI use cases over time?
  • RQ3: What challenges do legal teams face when integrating NLP solutions into their workflows?
  • RQ4: What are the Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects (ELSA) concerns associated with the adoption of NLP in the legal domain?
